The original had female sword fighting characters as well. The story wasn't anything to write home about though. It was a pretty typical Samurai/Western style plot; with the themes being entirely around honor. The sword fighting game mechanics and color/art really made up for it though. I gave it an 80/100 last year:
The entire concept of female versions of pop characters is a super old one, long before people started referring to these fictional universes as franchises . It didn't seem like anyone cared too much back in the 80s/90s .. or maybe they did? The writing for a lot of these comics wasn't really good by any modern standard.
But by comparison, the writing in modern cultural wreckage series like the new LoTR or Star Wars is absolutely terrible, compared to the previous generation. Sure you can write a female-version character and it not suck, but today it's much more likely it will get fucked up.
