I ran a proof-of-concept simulation first, which showed there was no way for us to detect the off-gassing vapours of the explosive material at normal temperatures. | jokingly suggested it would work better if we heated the sample. No one at the funding org saw the problem with this approach. In the end, they paid us in full and didn't require us to do the test.
