The Blair Witch Project (1999)
It doesn't deserve all the hate it gets. The reason people hate the ending is the same trait that made the rest of the movie well done. They showed GREAT RESTRAINT in writing and filming this and that's an aspect I've seen almost every other found footage movie fail at. It's honestly remarkable that the first one that popularized the 'found footage' thing, did it correctly and then everybody else fucked it up afterwards.
And there's also a lot of creepy stuff that the camera just hand-waves right over and doesn't focus on at all. That is how it SHOULD be. Not "FREEZE FRAME REWIND PAN ZOOM IN TO MAKE SURE THE AUDIENCE SAW THE CREEPY THING OoOoOoOoOoOo BET YOU'RE SCARED AREN'T YOU".
My biggest complaint is that the acting is very inconsistent. It ranges from truly genuine sounding panic to mega-ham. I'm betting the actors had their hearts in it but didn't have a whole lot of proper training for how to fake emotions that weren't pants shitting fear (they did a good job with that specifically).
The dialogue doesn't particularly stand out but it's competent and believable most of the time. Some good lines here and there.
"Was it the Wicked Witch of the West or the Wicked Witch of the East?"
"The Wicked Witch of the West was the bad one"
"... lets go east then"
Yes. The ending was underwhelming. They could have shown the monster a LITTLE BIT.
... but who knows, maybe they would have fucked it up like this:
