   Palestine 1917-1948

   Imperial Britain's actions - from the Balfour Declaration in 1917 to Israel's statehood in 1948 - were contrary to international law.... & leading British officials & politicians knew it.

   But the empire's strategic interests included control over Middle-East oil & a Jewish homeland in Palestine as a "reliable European outpost" near the Suez.
