A Google Streetview image of Ujibashidori in Uji, Japan. The street has an optical illusion painted into it to encourage the drivers to slow down. Six sets of "stones", made up of white, yellow and blue shapes, are painted, three on each side of the road, inside the carriageway. Each "stone" uses perspective to give a three-dimensional appearance; the white looks like the side face of a kerbstone, the yellow looks like the front face, and the blue looks like the top edge, so that subconsciously a car driver would feel that there is a set of solid kerbstones in the road. As you travel further down the road, each of the three pairs of "stones" encroaches more into the middle of the carriageway. The overall effect is that the road seems to narrow dramatically, and that only half of the width of the carriageway is available at the third set of shapes.
