The Devil Fetches Card Players: On an interior wall of the St. Marien church in Wesenberg, there used to be a large bloody spot, about whose origin the following tale was told. Many, many years ago, two of the churchgoers played cards with each other during mass while sitting in a corner close to the wall. Suddenly, the church walls burst and the Devil appeared in the newly formed gap. Immediately, he grabbed the two people who had desecrated God’s holy house, pulled them through the wall with such force that the blood splattered widely, and descended to Hell with them. The opening within the church walls closed again immediately afterwards, and only a large, bloody spot showed the location where the Devil had absconded with his prey. The bloody spot was visible for a long time after this incident, until time finally erased it after the passage of many centuries. Source: Bartsch, K.
