In 1998 a pre-release copy of Heroes of Might and Magic III appeared on Usenet. Management initially thought it was one of the testers sending copies to their friends over ICQ, but then 3DO contacted New World Computing to say the same had happened to them.
The next time a preview copy was sent out to journalists each copy was embedded with the name of the journo. Sure enough one of these copies turned up on usenet not long after tagged with the name 'Nick Ferrari'. Nick was apparently a reviewer at an East coast newspaper, but when the paper was contacted they claimed they didn't review games and no one with that name was on staff.
The review copies weren't being mailed to the papers office but a residential address. It turned out that "Nick" was a fake named used by a 14 year old who just wrote to the publishers and told them he was a reviewer and could they please send copies to his personal address.
Realizing it would be bad press to prosecute a kid they gave him a stern talking to and "Nick" was never heard from again.
(Needs translating, search for Ferrari)
