The Sun fired off two X-class flares today - an X1.7 from a region rotating away on the right edge and an X1.1 class flare from region 3780, now rotating into view on the left side. Two other regions in view are also capable of producing strong flares.
Effect of the X1.1 flare on earth is still being assessed. The big one in May that produced spectacular auroras, was an X8.7 flare, about 8 times stronger than X1.1.
