(Full transcript in thread. The following is abridged.) Justice for Sherman Lee Butler, Palmer Park tenant killed during an eviction. On the morning of Friday, July 12, a Palmer Park tenant was tragically shot and killed while experiencing a mental health crisis as he was being evicted from his home. DPD was there on-scene, apparently acting as backup to the Bailiff and their crew. While waiting for a mental health unit, the tenant was tased by an officer and then fatally shot by an armed Bailiff. In our opinion, this is a prime example of coordinated state violence. DPD, Bailiffs and the 36 District court working together on behalf of landlords and being weaponized against tenants and our communities. The tenant they killed is not nameless, and none of us are disposable. Our condolences to his friends and family. His name was Sherman Lee Butler. He was 45 years old and he called Palmer Park home. He was evicted by "Termination of Tenancy." This means he was evicted not because he wasn't paying his rent, but simply because the powers that be wanted him out. Now, he's dead; death by eviction. ... We will meet this Sunday, August 4th, at 3 pm at Old St. John's Church, 2120 Russell St. in Detroit. We encourage you to come, join the Justice Coalition for Sherman Lee Butler.
