3. Overview What are the main objectives which this engagement should achieve? Increasing capacity Probably on short term: migrating from version 4.0 to 5.0 and optimizing & tuning On long term: migrating to new database architecture, possible moving (partially) to other storage engines and maybe using cluster techology for some of the data. What are the basic funclions of the software thal will be using the dalabase system? Running the Bookings website, including the booking process, interfacing external systems (including feeds for availabilty data for hotels), financial processes. What category would you consider the software? (OLTP, Data Warehousing, Hybrid, Other) Hybrid What special requirements o challenges are there for this database application, if any? Increasing capacity What criteria must be fulfled in order to make a successful evaluation?

    The pre-travel questionaire was weird.

    The customer wanted 2-3x more capacity immediately and a plan for 10x within 2-3 years.

    That's a nice scaling job.

    They were running on Postgres, initially, and just completed the migration to MySQL – mostly, because Postgres had no scaling story worth telling and was operationally hostile.

    They tried Slony, and that was broken more often than not.

    Upgrades required downtime, and dumping and reloading the database.
