Mathematicians get annoyed at how physicists take beautiful formulas and clutter them up with 'useless' constants like
𝑐 - the speed of light
ℏ - Planck's constant
𝑘 - Boltzmann's constant
𝐺 - the gravitational constant
making it harder to see the essence of things. Mathematicians prefer units where all these constants are set equal to 1.
I used to be like that too - but right now I'm doing a project where I 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑 these constants to see the essence of things!
(Of course it's good to keep these constants around to avoid making mistakes where you equate quantities with different dimensions: this is what computer scientists call a 'type discipline'. That's important, but it's NOT what I'm talking about now.)
When you're studying just one physical theory at a time, you can set dimensionful constants equal to 1 to simplify things. But often we like to study a whole 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 of physical theories at once - a family where those constants take different values! We can't set them to 1 if we're interested in what happens when they approach 0. For example:
As 1/𝑐 → 0, special relativity reduces to Newtonian physics.
As ℏ → 0, quantum mechanics reduces to classical mechanics.
As 𝑘 → 0, statistical mechanics reduces to classical mechanics.
As 𝐺 → 0, general relativity reduces to special relativity.
And this is just the beginning of the story: various collections of constants can approach 0 at different rates, and so on.
When we do this, we're studying what mathematicians would call a 'moduli space' of theories - or even better, a 'moduli stack'. We may want to do 'deformation theory', where we expand answers in powers of some constant. And so on.
So don't scorn those constants!
So, since I now have a van to work on I will be focusing on what to do for my Vanlife blogging.
I figure just setting up a wordpress blog on Wanderers-Waypoint.com will be sufficient. I can add ActivityPub support for myself and build a community there with one of the forum plugins. That being said, if I do that then it becomes opt-in for federation. The plugin requires a user to toggle the process on.
So I am open to options as well.
I wasn't upset, yelling, or even agitated, I was just telling him the truth. I told him that I'm certainly not in the "anger" stage and had already completed the Americana grief cycle.
We both laughed, but in all honesty it was a bit depressing. I had hoped that the Boomers, by and large, would be figuring it out by now.
So anyway, this reinforces my belief that everyone is too dumb and still too consumed with consumerism to understand WTF is going on.
So, yeah.
Pretty typical.
Pretty sad.
I came out as trans to my baby sister almost four months ago to the day. I haven't heard hide nor hair from her since.
The day after my wife texted her and asked if she had any questions or wanted to talk.
She didn't really and basically just said she believes "God created my identity in the womb..." and so on.
So yesterday my wife went to her house to drop off some things we've had for a while. During the visit, my wife showed her a picture of the two of us at the ballet during our GirlsNightOut. My sis didn't really say anything about the pic BUT...
in news nearly as shocking as me telling my sister I'm trans, she said she would love to go to the ballet the next time we do a #GirlsNightOut
What
the
fuhhhhhhh???
Happy Pride?
I am always thinking about how @oya speaks about how Black folks are a triumph, and it is in that spirit that I write this message.
Reminder, with love, that we live in a backwards world. The ruling class worships the death cult of racial capitalism, and they spend much of their endless money trying to crush you and me. The folks running things are hateful, narrow-minded, greedy, and selfish. The societies we grew up in have been strangled and zombified by these people, and the result is wholesale destruction of everything they can get their hands on.
So if you ever feel like you just don't fit in or like the world just doesn't have the right space for you, please remember that you were never supposed to fit. You were supposed to die, long since. But you didn't. You're still here.
The ruling class has killed their imagination in service of profit and power, and so of course the social norms they have wrought don't include us. They can't even imagine our existence, let alone see us for who we are! This is their fault, their shortcoming, their ignorance. They are backwards and regressive and pathetic.
You, however, are magnificent. Just the way you are. And don't you forget it.
@BeAware @JenMorency @david I use it for remastering audio tracks I've already made, album covers because most people just don't understand my aesthetics, and have you tried to buy art work comms for a product that will be sold? I'm all for artists getting their cut, but when I pay someone 200 bucks for an album that most likely I'll break even on, that's not sustainable.
Then theirs my AI powered daughter, helping to organize my ADHD thoughts and creative concepts into a form that's readable, creative inspiration for writing, music and art projects--Oh and the very much needed to be said one. I use AI for text descriptions of immages/pictures/memes, as well as day-to-day, around the house stuff like reading my thermostat, getting cooking directions off of packages, identifying locations by picture if I'm out and about and can't figure out where I'm at and so on.
So yeah, the haters can honestly STFU and let those of us who came into things with an open mind and a clear conscience do our thing.
Besides, all the bitching and complaining they do releases more hot air into the atnosphere, and I'd rather get some use out of my GPUs and AI tools before they fuck it all up for us by making global warming worse thanks to their bitter exhalations. 🙃
