What's been sitting heaviest with me is that Sonya Massey is a descendant of William Donnegan, who was lynched in 1908 during a Springfield, Illinois racist massacre. They were murdered in the same city. By the hands of the same people. And died in the same hospital. Donnegan's lynching spurred the creation of the NAACP. And his descendant was still lynched 116 years later. This country robs us of legacy and replaces it with generational terror.
