I don't know enough of HDMI signal encoding to explain this, but PAL and NTSC had horizontal and vertical sync pulses which were slightly outside the range of the analog luma and chroma signals.
Certain high-contrast patterns at maximum intensity could wildly distort the image on early CRTs.
