When they arrived at the factory, Dearborn police, Dearborn firefighters, Detroit police, Michigan state police and Ford Motor Company private security blocked the marchers from proceeding. A police officer shouts, "Give 'em the gas! The approaching people are then attacked with tear gas. Relieved and in tears, they find that the wind blew the gas clouds away. One woman raises her fist, "Come on, you cowards! Only a mile to go!" Together, hand in hand, they continue their march, singing, " ’Tis the final conflict, Let each stand in his place. The Internationale shall be the human race."

The police launched tear gas against the marchers, some of whom began throwing stones and dirt clods in response.
The Fire Department attacked the protesters with cold water from their fire hoses, and the protesters continued to throw stones.
