One day I was at Lafayette Grill, a restaurant owned by Greek brothers. I was there to see my teacher Layhana (may her beauty rest in legend forever).
I was at the bar with this Moroccan guy Shariff. He was a gentle soul who owned a diner nearby. Shariff gives me a $20 bill so I can tip Layhana (we’d shower money on the dancer, rather than sticking the bill in her costume.
As we listened to the band playing a Turkish song, Sharif says—“Turkish, Egyptian..it doesn’t matter. We are all people.”
