The Parliament’s most radical voice fighting for privacy, German Pirate Patrick Breyer has long been seen as a pain in the butt for the European Commission and EU Council. Breyer was key to shaping laws ranging from the European Health Data Space to e-privacy. While he failed to secure a ban on targeted ads as a negotiator for the Digital Services Act, he was influential in pushing for major restrictions on the potential scanning of messages to detect child sexual abuse material in a draft EU law. Does he want back? No; instead Anja Hirschel will run in Germany. The computer scientist and data protection officer has already said she wanted to fight the “surveillance fanaticism of the EU Commission.”
