Hippocampus Cells in the hippocampus can reproduce and enable new memories to be formed. This is important for forming explicit memory as consolidation, encoding and retrieval takes place here. No memories are stored here. You can make implicit memories without the hippocampus, but you need it for explicit memory.

   Based on what I've noted down, the hippocampus deals with all things explicit memory, but I think it is more related to the handling of long term memory, as short term memory is handled elsewhere I believe.

   I didn't do great in psychology so don't take my word for it though 😂

   A quick Google search does agree with what you've said, however it also agrees in saying that the hippocampus helps consolidate it into long term memory.
