Teen charged in illegal phone code use Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 30th October, 1987 A 16-year-old Mt. Lebanon girl has been charged with making al- most 3,000 illegal long-distance telephone calls. Mt. Lebanon police Lt. David Demore said the teenager, a student at Mt. Lebanon High School, had acquired various corporate access codes to make phone calls on U.S. Sprint and ITT telecommunication lines. "She had made calls since July to two or three other teenagers in the Southwestern part of the United States," he said. He believes the girl was able to gain access to the corporate numbers given her by the other teens she had phoned or by some other means. "The only way to gain access to corporate telephone codes is by means of a computer," Demore said. "But the girl did not have a computer in her house." Corporations change their access codes about every six months to deter fraudulent calls, he said. Police, who refused to identify the student, charged her with theft of services. The case has been referred to the Secret Service because it involves out-of-state students. Demore said authorities learned about the girl during their investigation into a computer crime ring involving other students at the high school. In July, nine Mt. Lebanon students were arrested and charged with computer fraud. Police said they were tapping into corporate computers in at least six different states to obtain credit card numbers to order. thousands of dollars' worth of merchandise.
