Looking westward down Van Buren, past the intersection at Clark. It's noon and this block is mostly in the shadow. At the corner, we see a sign for "Americana Submarine" that looks 30-50 years old. Behind it another similar sign reads "Open 24 hours". Behind that, there's another very dated looking sign for a pizza joint. The elevated tracks of the L frame the right edge of the shot. And walking straight ahead of us, away from the camera, is an impeccably dressed Black man heading to work in one of the financial centers nearby. He has a light brown bowler hat, a tan overcoat, khaki trousers, brown leather shoes, black gloves, and a messenger bag.

I was standing at Van Buren and Clark, realizing I'd never noticed what a time warp that block looks like (the ancient signage) when this perfectly dressed man walked out of, say, 1978 and into the frame to add the cherry on top.
