While I can envision many benign uses of generative AI, official meme-making is not one of them. Elected officials and candidates for office should think twice before training voters to disbelieve their own eyes. Sometime soon, the same technology they are currently using for song parodies will be used to depict them saying or doing things they did not, for the explicit purpose of undermining trust in government and society. And the candidates themselves are the very people bringing that technology into the mainstream and sanctioning its use in politics. But this is the way with generative AI. It gets things wrong, but we talk to it as if it were our husband. The images are suspect, but it looks enough like a Hollywood legend that we suspend our disbelief. Our human coworker was better, but the bot version is cheaper. We know better, but use it anyway.
