Image shows the first comic strip appearance of Franklin in 1968. Franklin meets Charlie on the beach and asks, "Is this your beach ball?" Charlie responds, "Hey! Yeah! Thank you very much!" Franklin says, "I was swimming out there and it came floating by..." Charlie says, "My silly sister threw it into the water." Franklin says, "I see you're making a sand castle... It looks kind of crooked." Charlie responds, "I guess maybe it is.. where I come from, I'm not famous for doing things right."

The reception to the character of Franklin in 1968, and the origin of why the character was created (a letter from a White Los Angeles school teacher following the assassination of MLK Jr.), plus the first comic strip Franklin appeared in, in 1968.
