I think this intuition is right. Over time, in the past, similar protocols sort of mash up into one thing as they get more use. That's bound to happen with the social web protocols that get adoption.
The people promoting POSSE (https://indieweb.org/POSSE) seem to see it, too.
In the past, safely hopping into federated / web spaces was exclusive to techy folks. That's how we got Gmail, FB, Twitter. That's happening again, but it doesn't have to.
I’m starting to move back to the old way: making posts over at nathanschneider.info, syndicating them on social. Hello, world. Wish me luck.

1. drop the Pod from Podcasting
2. "POSSE - IndieWeb" https://indieweb.org/POSSE
3. enable more low-cost options for hosting for 2
4. more tools like ACurry’s podcastindex
5. RSS/ATOM Lacks well-supported CDATA rendering (pleasant html) too often, how about RSS and HTML working like buddies for a better UX? that is, link to real description etc rather than crossing the fingers.
Been consuming and producing for years, take back the Internets!
