Yesterday, on multiple occasions, I noticed young people filming videos for TikTok, and I'm pretty sure I ended up in the background of a few.

Today, for the very first time, I decided to install the app and search for the location's hashtag. I found way more videos than I expected, though I didn't spot myself.

As I kept scrolling, driven by whatever logic fuels their algorithm, the content started to shift. In no time at all, I was flooded with videos of young girls, not all of them adults, in explicit poses and highly revealing clothes. They were performing (what they clearly thought were) sensual dances, all following the exact same trend and the same background music. Then came the boys, doing something similar but different, flexing and showing off their bodies as if they were standing in front of a mirror.

I kept scrolling without pausing, as none of this holds even the slightest interest for me.

Eventually, I stumbled upon what I assume was some kind of "challenge": young girls simulating sexual acts to entertain their male friends, all synced to the beat of the music. It was quite explicit, even if they weren't actually showing skin. The captions said something along the lines of "Can we still stay best friends?" or something similar.

For a brief moment, I felt like decades of "we are more than just bodies" and hard-fought battles for women's respect had just gone up in smoke - all reduced to cheap sexual innuendos in exchange for a few likes.

Maybe I'm just getting old. But I uninstalled the app without a second thought.

After 7 October 2023, I started to understand the deep connections between US mass incarceration, policing and surveillance, and Israel’s system of apartheid. I learned how the empire exports its lethal technologies.

After I realized how American capital sustains Israeli violence, the comfort of political disengagement became impossible.

With this new knowledge, I also felt a need for community and found it with Jewish Voice for Peace – even though I am not Jewish myself.

As the genocide deepened and repression escalated inside the United States, it became clear that continuing to work for Dell was incompatible with my conscience.

The US government openly bankrolls Israel’s slaughter while criminalizing dissent at home. ICE terrorizes communities and federal agents now brazenly execute American citizens on camera to send a message to all of us that resistance is futile.

Whenever I named the harassment, keyboard "leftists" (almost always men) came out of the digital woodwork to accuse me of "centering" myself.

As if naming their intense, violent, and misogynistic behavior towards me somehow detracted from the project of opposing them.

if server implementations don’t explicitly filter it, it can be done.

I guess that’s a better question: are there any ActivityPub clients that tolerate bare IPs? IIRC email also supports bare IPs, but no one is willing to take mail without a domain, so the ability is moot. I would have expected to find someone posting from an IP, but I haven’t seen it yet. I might have to try it myself.

As for having the ID tied to a specific IP, I’ve seen enough dirty migrations that I think a sizable amount of people just don’t care. It’s sad that ActivityPub chose URIs as a means of identification instead of something more location agnostic like public/private key signing.
