It's a relatively synthetic engine sound. It starts off as a low, muted hum. I apply the throttle, at which point the filters open up, the distortion increases, and the oscillators increase in pitch. When I let go of the throttle, the filters close and the distortion decreases pretty quickly, and the pitch slowly drifts back down. I do this a couple of times.

Had a little downtime, so made a little engine sound experiment using Web Audio API.
7 Oscillators, a wave shaper, and two filters.
Still playing with it, but I think it sounds pretty neat.
The things I do to procrastinate working on actual projects...
