A leathery, mustard-colored maple leaf lies palm-up on a dark forest floor. Veins radiate out symmetrically from its central rib, drawing a skeletal Christmas tree. Tight, round drops of water are scattered across the leaf's surface. Bright sunlight shines on the leaf. The droplets focus the light into bright spots, each surrounded by a dark annulus from which light has been sucked: a zero-sum game.
