in the uk jury duty requires you serve minimum 2 weeks, if your first case finishes earlier than that you will be assigned to a second case which means as a juror you're hoping to have a case that goes 2 weeks or to stretch out the deliberation if it comes close. But once its past 2 weeks your incentive is to come to a conclusion as soon as possible so you can go home.
so a jury for a case, that has extended longer than 2 weeks, takes to reach a verdict past the initial hour of sitting down and check everyones initial vote will be an indicator of whether the jury is split on the matter.
after a set amount of time if the case is quite overt, the judge can decide to accept a majority verdict to break an impasse first requesting 11 of the 12 jurors if they agree, then if it continues to drop it to 10 of the 12. At most you can only have 2 who disagree in such cases.
