“Although its shape is certainly eye-catching, the musical advantages of Emery Wood's five-string violin are unclear. The curious outline is not discussed at all in his 1907 patent. Instead, he focuses on the fact that the feet of the bridge rest on the instrument's back, rather than its belly. The back of the instrument displayed here, however, is constructed from hardwood rather than more resonant softwood, which runs counter to most accepted acoustical thinking.”
