Photo of an oak tree, showing its trunk and main branches. It is very thickly upholstered in green moss, covering almost every inch of bark. Sprouting out all over but particularly at joints and along the horizontal surfaces, are clusters of feathery polypody ferns. Low down on the trunk is a patch of pale green lichen in the shape of a smiley face emoji! The tree is growing on the edge of a river bank, between mossy boulders. The ground is carpeted in brown leaves dropped from the tree. White water is rushing past behind. On the far bank is an evergreen rhododendron, an escapee. Beyond that is a woodland, trees bare, and a grey sky.

This oak growing beside a Dartmoor river is hosting a fine collection of mosses, polypody ferns & lichens - although I suspect someone may have given certain lichen a helping hand. That’s surely not a natural growth pattern 🤔
