“WHY DO WE HAVE DRAG QUEENS READING TO KIDS?” The same question was asked in the ‘60s about black people on Sesame Street The same answer is... destigmatization. Networks said “black people teaching kids their ABCs”, parents heard, “dirty idiots teaching kids to be lazy and speak English improperly” because that was what black people had been portrayed as. The fact it was controversial at all actually proved its necessity! And a generation of white children’s first memories of black people was just some nice, normal person teaching them their ABCs. Then as now, we say “reading a book” and people hear “pole-dancing and twerking”. The very controversy proves its necessity.
