Lots and lots of redshanks (grey and white wading birds with distinctive bright orange legs) perching on a sand-coloured concrete wall in full sunshine, with a peaceful sea below going right to the horizon at the top of the picture. I was peering over the top of the harbour wall at them. You have to move slowly or you scare them, I found.

We were surprised and delighted yesterday to find lots and lots of redshanks clinging to the very steep outside of the harbour wall yesterday. It was cold but sunny; they must have been glad of the warmth, while they waited for low tide, when they’d be able to swarm on to the tidal sands and get something to eat. This is just some of them; there were a lot more.
