The great dark oval of the storm sits just below the equator. Light blue-white clouds collect at the bottom of the storm – material dredged up from the lower atmosphere. A second storm, slightly smaller, sits in a band near the south pole.

Voyager 2 captured this image of Neptune's Great Dark Spot on its approach to the planet a few days earlier.
But when Hubble looked just five years later, the Earth-sized storm with 1300 mph winds was gone.
