Gender and Technology, Gender as Technology Course description: How does gender interact with technology? How does technology shape our embodiment and our experiences of gender? This course draws on a variety of disciplinary sources, including transgender studies, science and technology studies, human-computer interaction, and legal theory, to explore how technologies are gendered and shape gender. Potential topics include TSA body scanners, facial recognition and facial surveillance, microwaves and other home appliances, plastic surgery, and contemporary algorithmic decision-making tools, including “AI”. Students will be expected to engage rigorously with questions of how technologies produce particular visions of behavior, including through a final research project that critiques a particular technology with which they interact. No technical background is required, but prior coursework in WGS is strongly recommended.
