Andrews faced trial before Justice Samuel Nelson on May 24, 1864, and was found guilty, receiving a sentence of 3 years of hard labor. He stood as the sole rioter charged in the federal courts. NU District Attorney Abraham Oakey Hall, a Tammany Hall Democrat, handled all the other cases connected to the Draft Riots and earned praise for ensuring fair trials. Out of the indicted rioters, 67 were convicted, but few received lengthy prison sentences.
