   I don't post my every thought here on this account.

   Nor do I post every action of my life here.

   I specifically focus on solarpunk, mutual aid, and actions that can improve our life in the here and now... with what we have to work with.

   And I'll occasionally post privacy or hacking related stuff. Every once in a while.

   So. With that. And with everything that is happening right now. I want to post a quick mundane and happy update.

   Tonight was the monthly meeting of
   my town's Free Fridge and Food Rescue group. In addition to online chat and an email newsgroup, we meet in person once a month as a sort of anchor.

   Tonight was special for me for one particular reason.

   I haven't done jack shit for the group this last month.

   I am going through the final bits of legally ending a previous relationship and I'm taking on LOTS of side gigs to pay for that. I am *not* in a good place financially... but I have paths forward.

   But that doesn't matter for this post. Here's what matters...

   ...the group has THRIVED without me.

   This is huge. I and a couple of others created the group a little over a year ago. Those other founders have had to step aside and many others have stepped up. For the first chunk of all of this, I had to have my hand in everything to keep it going.

   But y'all.

   Others have stepped up and taken leadership in initiatives. And many many others have followed those leaders and helped accomplish things.

   In fact, I've taken a massive step back from the Free Fridge side of things and am now focusing on Food Rescue solely (in the very small moments I have). Those that have taken over the Free Fridges are doing amazing things that I would not have thought to do.

   The entire group is running itself now. Without my help. And has done so for over a month.

   To have something you created continue on without you is an incredible feeling.

   Tonight was a good night. A mundane night. We discussed things we had done last month and things we plan on doing next month. Different folks talked and others brought up questions and ideas. Folks broke off and collaborated.

   Oh... and it was brought up that we need another potluck / BBQ. We said we would have those quarterly and, well, the last one was three months ago.

   So that's gonna happen here soon too.

   That would be 13 years ago.

   The warning is timely. But some of the folks like Vint Cerf became part of the issue when we remember how we had to fight to keep .org affordable.

   But again it's a reflection of big tech. Our early internet pioneers flirted with VCs and capital not that long ago.

   So it's on us to save the open web. No one is coming to save it. So we must try.

   You cannot put the "same value" punishment, exactly, because the world isn't a math formula.

   If punishment for stealing is returning, then you made stealing 100% profitable no matter how successful you are. If you rape a rapist, he will win twice. Do you really not see the issue with 1:1 justice?

   Ok, so what do you do then? Well, the anwser is 100:1 justice. It is also called deterrent or punitive justice. With punishments at a 100x severity of the crime, the criminal does everything he can to avoid said crime. But once he is punished unjustly, he will feel justified to push out 100 times his pain back into the world. To avoid that case, the bast solution we have is still just the presumption of innocence. The famous "beyond reasonable doubt" standart, that we game up on as a society 15 years ago.

   So, my point simply is, that justice is insanely complicated shit, that will never be balanced. 🤷♂️

   Fedi promo video in numbers - a mini thread 🧵

   I originally published the video "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" on my self-hosted Ghost blog / PeerTube 11 days ago.

   So far it has 10k views on PeerTube with 33 comments. Mostly positive.

   I also uploaded it to YouTube 5 days ago - to spread the message farther - and it has 14.4k views there, with 166 comments (initially positive, but they've turned dark and critical lately).

   Anyway these numbers don't tell the whole story

   Saw this meme, and I realized one detail...

   Frieren did not train Fern to use a basic spell though. Frieren went for over 900 years without over using that particular spell. Modern mages might call it basic, but it still is Zoltraak. A spell made by the most badass general of demon army mere 100 years ago.

   So, for her it is a shiny new spell. And an extremely efficient at that.

   It isn't a bow in a world of modern guns. It is an AK-47 in a world of guns that jam way too often.
