   The folktale you know as “The Three Billy-goats Gruff” (but which I in my translation have called “The Three Billy-Goats Bruse,” restoring the original name) was collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen in the early summer of 1842, from parliamentary representative Anders Lysgaard, who lived on the farm at Svennes in Biri, Oppland. The farm still stands. Here it is on Google Maps.

   Asbjørnsen was on his way to Gudbrandsdalen, where a month or so later, he would record the legends Ibsen used to write his masterpiece, Peer Gynt (1867).

   A productive holiday, then.
