The voices clamouring for decriminalisation tend not to be the hollow-eyed mothers of Cranhill, run ragged trying to keep their children away from the discarded syringes and gouching addicts in the urine-soaked stairwells of crumbling tower blocks.
The people whose lives have been wrecked watching loved ones destroy themselves with some of the most addictive substances known to man, do not, on the whole, favour liberalisation of drugs laws. They also tend to be unable to ship their kids off to the Priory for a month if it all goes a bit Trainspotting.
It’s the middle classes, worried about young Hamish’s job prospects if he’s caught with a little stash on a party night, who back decriminalisation. Often, it’s just naked self-interest disguised as concern. It’s a health condition, don’t you know?
