   All the instances listed on these have promised to obey certain standards of reliability and content moderation.

   You don't need to be on mastodon.social, but don't get stressed if you are either :)

   I run one, it's called @FediGarden and there's a website at https://fedi.garden

   All of the instances listed are under 50k and obey the Mastodon Covenant. It also includes non-Mastodon servers which obey the covenant's rules. More info at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site/

   Basically, you should be okay on servers listed at https://joinmastodon.org/servers or https://fedi.garden

   All the servers at these sites have promised to obey certain standards of reliability and moderation (https://joinmastodon.org/covenant).

   If you're not sure, just pick a general server. You can always move your account if you change your mind.
