   That actually helps cement the total-war spirit in place, however. This is a powerful social force, the feeling of resentment that the non-soldier feels at their civilian status which, under authoritarian rule, is kept inflamed till it's unbearable.

   It becomes easy for such self-loathing persons to allow themselves to become something really dishonorable and treacherous, justifying their crimes as legitimate in a state of total war. Everyone can be a soldier or a cop if they just want it bad enough.
