The Trump campaign aims to use today's shooting as a sort of Reichstag fire to incite his supporters to step up street violence while calling for more state repression targeting his enemies of choice.
The Biden campaign has already paused all outbound communications and withdrawn their television advertisements, ceding the entire field of narrative to Donald Trump, who will have no compunction about using his status as a victim to advance his efforts to victimize others.
One of the classic mechanics of totalitarianism is that protecting the safety of the leader becomes a justification for violence against large swathes of the population.
As centrists join the far right in paving the way for totalitarian rule under Trump, we have to organize to defend our communities. If you have been in denial about the challenges ahead of us, this should be a wake-up call to find each other and prepare for them.
Having shrunk by 40% in the prior decade, union membership represented only 2⅓% of national population.
As a reminder, rule of thumb threshold for political change is 3.5% of population visible in sustained action:

For further comparison, union membership dropped from 5⅔% to 4⅓% of Usian population since 2000.
1933's NIRA §7(a) did lead to twice as many strikes—tripling number of strikers. Yet even a national general strike wouldn't have moved needle for change.

There's a mental health crisis in science.
Studies that collectively surveyed tens of thousands of researchers worldwide suggest that scientists’ mental-health struggles are a direct result of a toxic research culture.
41% of respondents reported moderate to severe anxiety and 39% had moderate to severe depression.
Those levels are six times greater than in the general population.
As always, it's exacerbated for members of under-represented groups which when it comes to science is pretty much everyone who's not a white man from a high-income country: women, non-binary individuals, people of colour, those from sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) and students on low incomes...also senior researchers and scientists in different countries.
