Dating back to before the dinosaurs, #HorseshoeCrabs are among the Earth's most ancient animals. They've survived for almost half a billion years, but now, in North America, they're at great risk: Each year the #BiomedicalIndustry "harvests" nearly a million crabs to drain their blood. That blood is used in #pharmaceuticals that save human lives โ but at a terrible cost to the crabs and the species that depend on them, like #endangered #RedKnots.

It can undermine water resources, carve through cultural areas, and damage the underlying tundra. Each of these individual impacts prove that seismic activity is a dangerous proposal.
The Department of the Interior is accepting public input on whether to allow seismic activity, but only until Dec. 8.

Caribou herds would also be put at risk. The herd migrates through the area where ConocoPhillips has proposed seismic activity, and surveys could separate caribou from their historic breeding grounds.

#ConocoPhillips, an oil and gas giant, is seeking approval to conduct #SeismicBlasting in search of #oil and #gas in the #Arctic.
ConocoPhillips' seismic application, which was submitted to the #Biden administration, requests testing across more than 270,000 acres of the Arctic. It would involve months of dragging heavy thumper trucks and other machinery across a fragile #ecosystem.

The National Park Service (#NPS) is currently seeking public input on the Draft Environmental Assessment for a proposed plan that could lead to the complete elimination of this historic #herd, the ONLY wild horse herd in the state.
Currently, the park is home to approximately 195 #WildHorses.

Experts call for action to protect vast areas of the #SouthernOcean and help safeguard the shrimp-like crustaceans at the base of the food web.

If you love #penguins, #whales and a livable #climate, then it might be time to stand up for Antarctic #krill.

Thatโs bad news for krill โ and everything that depends on them โ which is a lot.
Only a few inches long, Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) may be small, but their contributions to the #ecosystem are massive โ much like the swarms themselves.

While krill have been spotted thousands of feet deep on the #seafloor, they also come up to the surface of the water to feed on #algae that absorb #CarbonDioxide.

Climate change isnโt the only threat. Krill are also a target for #IndustrialFishing vessels. (Yes, humans eat krill, too, as do our pets.) This #fishing puts a lot of other species at risk.
โMost of the fishing happens in these really small nearshore areas
