I’ve been used to 64 GB of RAM on an Intel iMac and, with the current pricing nuttiness, I’m tempted to save $600 by speccing a Mac Studio with 48 GB. Do we think I’ll regret this?
Only WordPress could so badly mess up how stylesheets work that some of my rules are being applied while others are not even reading. It’s not a lack of specificity; they just don’t exist for selectors like “body” or “main”.
It is so cool how WordPress keeps changing the way developers can opt out of crappy preset and, when it is pointed out how irritating this is, core developers respond by saying “test the pre-release versions” as though everyone has the capacity to treat their website as an always-changing software product. https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/65336
Google has gotten a lot of kicking for all the generative A.I. polluting its results, but DuckDuckGo is far, far worse. The top twenty results are absolutely full of this junk (and, because it is powered by Bing, a bunch of MSN-syndicated articles).
Websites like TechCrunch using Admiral have gotten very aggressive at telling you to turn off your ad blocker, so now I get to read something that is mostly text, yet still hogs 20–40% of my CPU and requires a thousand HTTP requests and 36 MB of stuff. The web is so cool.
I have no idea why half the desktop apps I use today operate in a single window only, but it needs to stop. Let me open windows! Don’t make me toggle between tabs!
Do I trust this computer?, my iPhone asks me for what has to be the thousandth time using the same computer logged into the same Apple ID. Enter your passcode, it demands once again, reflecting the hardware, software, and services working together in a way only Apple can deliver.
I was going to write this short ditty of a piece about storing photos in iCloud and now, several days into trying to figure this out, it’s turning into a mess and I think the conclusion will be “using iCloud to store your photos is a nightmare”.
Is there a clever way (maybe a smart album) to see which images in Photos are stored only as low-resolution thumbnails? De-selecting iCloud Photos in Settings throws this error despite having “Download Originals” turned on for years, and no other related errors are present.
If you try signing into YouTube on your Apple TV by scanning the QR code, it opens the YouTube app which isn’t compliant with Google’s secure browser policy, so it fails to sign in.
If you try signing in using your username and password on the TV, Google throws a custom keyboard that isn’t compatible with the Remote app or autofill features.
I remember when Joshua Topolsky insisted Google was getting better at design.
AirPlay is cool because sometimes it works, and other times it drops its connection every fifteen seconds and you’re hosting a dinner party and you restart all your stuff and it still doesn’t work and you give up and put on a vinyl record instead.
I only found out today that the Command + Shift + \ command works in any (?) MacOS app that uses NSWindowTabs. Not sure it’s useful, but it is interesting. Try it in Finder.
The thing gnawing at me about the justification for the tariffs is that the U.S. is framing itself as “looted” by a bunch of developing countries, when it is actually the reverse — to a troubling degree.
