For decades, the planet has been exploited w/out limits in the name of "progress", leaving a devastating impact that affects, above all, the most vulnerable groups. Women, under a capitalist system, have been systematically oppressed.

This intersection between the exploitation of nature and the oppression of women is the axis of ecofeminism, a movement that connects the fight for social justice with the defense of the planet.

Ecofeminism criticizes an economic model that treats nature as an infinite resource & that puts capital accumulation above human needs. This system is based on the free work of women and the exploitation of ecosystems, perpetuating social, racial, & gender inequalities.

This oppression does not affect all women in the same way: depending on class or ethnicity, inequalities take on different nuances. Environmental racism concentrates pollution in vulnerable communities, where indigenous women lead struggles against toxic waste .

2/ Capitalism needs not only profit, but exponentially growing profit.

Extraction and accumulation of natural resources is the only way. It must take more from life than it gives back.

Capitalism requires energy to turn natural resources into waste: Energy = Resources = Labour

3/ Of course, there’s nothing naturally cheap about labour & nature. On the contrary, they’re actively cheapened.

European capitalists came up with this dualism that casts humans as subjects with mind and agency, & nature as an object to be exploited and controlled for human ends.

4/ Such a system breeds inequalities and ecological breakdown.

Claim of capitalistic growth and material ‘progress’: improving everyday life for millions.

Reality: the majority is barely keeping their heads above water.

In most societies, there are strong inequalities, colonial legacies,
racism, to this day.

5/ ❗Dispossession, enslavement and exploitation are legitimized by shunting nonhuman beings, Black and Indigenous people, and most women as not-quite-fully-human.

6/ ➡️ Colonialism is a precondition, as well as a consequence of the need for energy of the capitalist system. The North (Minority World) appropriates this energy and the South (Majority World) pays the highest price.

7/ ⚠️ For degrowth, the problem is not the behaviour of individual “consumers” but rather the structure and logic of the underlying economic system: capitalism.

We need a restructuring of the system away from profit to the needs of all people

COP 29 is a fossil fuel scam

For 30 years the UN COP Climate Conferences have failed to deliver meaningful change. They have served as a ‘talking shop’ with the big polluters given seats at the top table to cast doubt over the sciences and delay meaningful action.

This November’s #COP29 event opens under the same bad auspices of last year. A petro-state – Azerbaijan - once again assumes the COP Presidency.

Corporations having more rights than people are a thing of dystopian nightmares, yet it is the reality many of us live in under capitalism's reign.

Degrowth means putting power back in the hands of people and letting people, not corporations decide on the fate of the environment and planet.

In the 90s and early 2000s, ExxonMobile and other Fossil Fuel companies spent billions to undermine science.

In the 2020s, tech companies are spending billions to undermine democracy.

All in the name of profits for an elite few.

We must support political efforts to stop billionaires from destroying our democracy. Our planet depends on it.
