Growing up, some of the kids made fun of me and other Asian kids, saying we ate dogs. Along with mocking the items in the lunches we brought from home. They were just kids, and I said and did plenty of dumb things as a kid too, but that stuff caused long-term trauma. There’s no excuse for any adult to say that type of racist garbage.

I left as it started to get too hot and crowded. The haze cleared out when I crossed the bridge to the parking lot but I was ready to go. Last thing I saw was juvenile Yellow-crowned night heron.

There aren’t many hummingbird fossils because their bones are so tiny and fragile. The oldest fossil is about thirty million years old and was found in Germany (where hummingbirds are no longer found).

Of all the birds I see, the corvids seem to be the most thoughtful. I think it’s something in how they observe a situation and aren’t easily startled.

There were some areas of a different variety of Mexican bush sage with white and pink flowers and I was hoping to find a bird feeding at it. Though their brains are tiny, there is evidence that the hummingbird is capable of creating mental maps so it doesn’t return to a flower until the flower has replenished its nectar.
