I just finished reading “DIY Urbanism in Africa” by Stephen Marr & Patience Mususa, & I found it engaging as someone eager to learn about urbanism in different parts of the world.

The collection of essays about different cities in sub-Saharan Africa taught about politics & reasoning behind do-it-yourself actions in situations where the government has relinquished or neglected its responsibilities to society and the damage done by relying on neoliberal policies where corporations fail to deliver

I’m leading one final 2024 Seattle Queer History Ride Saturday August 3 at 1 pm!

This 5 mile ride starts from Volunteer Park & visits historic places in Capitol Hill & Pioneer Square as I tell stories about Seattle’s queer history at a Leisurely pace.

I read “Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities” by Veronica Davis, & I flew through it because it was so interesting! It’s of good advice for everyone from engineers to planners & advocates. I will try to use its concepts in my safe streets advocacy

Come by Beacon Hill light rail station today from 5:30-7 pm to check out SDOT's open house for the Beacon Ave S & 15th Ave S Safety Project! They are revealing new 60% designs for this project that will create a safer route connecting residents in South Seattle.

I attended this & talked w a few SDOT folks; takeaways:
-great choice of location, lots of people passing thru who stopped by to learn abt project
-few ppl still trying to push cyclists onto other streets
-60% designs shown on many printed pages
-NW corner at 14th/15th changed from flexpost barrier to concrete island w bike lane cut-thru and 3” mountable curb apron for turning buses

-15th/Beacon intersection to have all ped-bike signal phase, I suggested adding No Turn on Red
-concrete bike lane barrier to have small gaps every 15 ft or so for drainage
-I asked if they’d have same cracking issues as Melrose Ave, answer was these will be wider & have additional internal metal reinforcement
-outside BH lt rail, bike lanes go behind bus stop shelters

-ongoing issue on 15th Ave: where do delivery trucks park w/o blocking bike lane/sidewalk? Not yet figured out, suggested side streets might not work
-trash can pickup may be handled by designated zones atop wide concrete bike lane curb on 15th Ave
-center turn lane on Beacon Ave to be removed
-loading zones on Beacon being preserved and/or expanded, outreach being done w businesses

1/2 Quick story: being tired of encountering drivers parking in the bike lanes at each side of Pike St & Boren Ave on #Seattle Capitol Hill and getting absolutely no response to reports/FIFI/etc from #SDOT I did a little experiment a week ago by installing my own signs @carbikelanesea

Quintessential #Seattle transit moment:
While showing my brother the city on a #SEAbikes ride, we decided to head home via light rail. At Westlake station, one elevator was broken, so transit security sent us to other elevator, but it was also broken, so I carried my e-bike down the stairs to the train platform ?

Evening #SEAbikes commute (downtown #Seattle - #BeaconHill ) bike conditions:
-Pike St PBL uphill/east into Capitol Hill: lots of snow/ice in lane, some salt is helping, but downhill lane is probably unsafe
-12th Ave bike lane: unusable due to snow/ice, must ride in traffic
-José Rizal Bridge PBL: southbound gets treacherous approaching uphill curve which is completely covered in snow & ice @seabikeblog #nxp
