Gardening for heat, substitutions.

Huazontle, komo and evening primrose. They grow large, produce loads, have a very long growing season with cut and come again method and thrive in heat. I get more out of these plants in the space they grow than broccoli, cauliflower and gailan.

Even better? The cabbage whites don’t destroy them and they’re not water hogs!

All the major commercial staple crops will be more expensive this year. If you live in a warm/hot climate, there is still time to plant sweet potatoes. They are more pest resistant than regular potatoes. And they will grow in the free mulch below.

You can grow sweet potatoes from the ones in the grocery store. Choose organic if possible in case they’ve been sprayed for root inhibitors. #solarpunksunday

There’s a lot of anti-gardening/GYO discourse online right now. It seems to be a reaction against the no-lawn movement. Their “reasoning” is that gardens use more water than grass.

It all depends on what plants you grow. #NativePlants do not require anymore water than typical rainfall.

Is anyone interested in a citrus thread similar to my big pepper thread?

It would take longer to put together but would have points in companion planting, listing varieties comparing economy of space to yield, scientific research and agricultural practices, using the whole fruit, etc.

I grow and use a lot of citrus and have come across a lot of stuff in my research that is not well known.

With everything happening in the world, it’s really hard to post about plants. It feels like we’re on the cusp of WWIII.

I went hiking yesterday on a trail that is lined with wild serviceberries.

No serviceberries. 0. It looks like all the trees aborted the fruit before ripening as there is no trace of anything this year.

My rooted cutting aborted its fruit but I didn’t think anything of it since it’s only 20cm tall. But all the wild trees? WTF

The only thing I found were some dried fruit that looked like it came from last year.

I did manage to collect some black highbush blueberry and wild blueberry for seed saving.

I saved the black blueberry last year and cold-stratified them outside by just burying the berries in pots and only one came up. This year I’m saving the seeds in the fridge in moist vermiculite to see if it works better.

Researchers tested different pepper varieties, and found that the “Amish chicken” is one of the most nutritious peppers. It’s number 39 in the peppers pic.

I can’t seem to find this pepper anywhere. Does it have another name? Amish pimiento, yellow stuffing pepper and Amish finger (which is only available in the EU) don’t match the pic. 🤨
