Though she showed up pregnant, bleeding and in pain, emergency room doctors in Texas turned Kyleigh Thurman away, handing her a pamphlet on miscarriage and telling her to “let nature take its course.”
Three days later, the ER finally admitted her. But it was too late; her fallopian tube had already ruptured.
There are at least 100 others like her.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves on Trump's racist lie about VP Kamala Harris' race:
"One thing I’ll tell you about Donald Trump is Donald Trump is going to be Donald Trump. I’m going to focus on the policies that Kamala Harris is looking at."

Brett Favre is now the only person out of six who attended a January 2019 meeting at his home who hasn’t been criminally charged over the Mississippi welfare scandal.
And even if investigators believe there's evidence of a crime, the window to charge him could run out in as little as three months due to the statute of limitations.

BREAKING: The Mississippi House just passed Medicaid expansion by a 96-20 vote.
That's more than enough to overcome a veto from Gov. Tate Reeves.
It now heads to the Senate.

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith voted against the Ukraine aid bill, saying she can't support it without "protecting our border security."
But last week, she voted against a combined Ukraine aid/border security package, saying it'd give Biden "campaign material."

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch threatened Target in a letter calling its Pride merch "obscene," "Anti-Christian" and "Satanic."

NEW: New footage shows that Jaheim McMillan, a Black 15-year-old, was running away when a Gulfport Police Officer fired 8 shots at him at a Family Dollar, killing him.
The state released the footage as a grand jury declined to indict the officer.
Police say he had a gun and was turning toward the officer. In the video, he appears to be running away from the officer.

In October, Gulfport Police Chief Adam Cooper claimed that "McMillan turned both his body and his weapon toward the officer" before the officer shot at him.
But the video shows that only five seconds pass from the time the officer arrives and shoots McMillan—who appears to be running away—8 times.
The officer yells "Stop! Drop it!" and immediately begins firing.

Tyre Nichols was murdered by people working for a system that was built on slave patrols.
You can't reform a system built on that foundation.
You need a different system with a radically different foundation.

On what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the former "Pink House" at the center of the Dobbs cass is now white.
What was Mississippi's last abortion clinic will soon be a luxury consignment shop called "Hunt." #RoeVWade
I shot this photo of Derenda Hancock outside the Pink House 10 years ago today on the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade—a time when Missisisppi lawmakers were attacking abortion rights, but when there was still a pro-Roe majority on the Supreme Court.
Honestly, the fact that southerners so comfortably use "the law" to mean "the police" really speaks to something we intuitively understand about American justice.
Are the police people who "enforce the law," or are they "the law" itself? The way southerners so often speak, it's the latter.

NEW: With 54% of Mississippi's hospitals in danger of closing, medical leaders warned state lawmakers of a "looming disaster" unless they expand Medicaid.
Gov. Tate Reeves and House Speaker Gunn have long opposed what Reeves calls "Obamacare expansion."

“The lack of access to healthcare for many Mississippians is currently a crisis, not a new crisis, but one that has been fermenting... As hospitals close across Mississippi, access to life-saving medical care becomes a real threat to all Mississippi."

MSMA: “There is a sizable gap that exists for working Mississippians who cannot afford private insurance, yet whose income is too much to qualify for Mississippi Medicaid. ... [H]ospitals are required to treat them regardless of their inability to pay."

MSMA: "And because these individuals are uninsured, the hospital is not compensated for necessary care. Such an economical strain on hospitals is not one that even the most successful private business could not endure.”
