Overheard (in a slack): "I would please like to ban both the mastodon reply guys who have takes about bluesky, and the bluesky posters with smug takes about mastodon
they all suck, and should all be banished to Threads so that the rest of us can get on with whatever"
Still going through and sending out invites for a retro/postmortem call regarding this weekend's spam attack, but in the interim I also made an asynchronous retro form: https://forms.gle/V4h9zBE6pcTvpQAx8
Also useful if you hate video calls, have a conflict on your calendar, or otherwise prefer writing. Thanks for sharing and/or replying!
Currently sleeping the sleep of the righteous, @andrew was up way too late building tools to fend off the current wave of fedi spam, playing whack-a-mole with bad accounts, and getting fedi friends up and running with their own blocklists.
I’d like to convene a discussion this week or next to do a mini retro on this attack and some #designthinking work around fedi spam fighting tools. If you’re interested in the discussion, @ me your email or send one to spamretro at hypatia dot ca and I’ll loop you in on it 🙏
Would love to have a proper UR/UX person on the call, I’m a mere amateur at that part 😅
Part of me feels like we're gonna look back on this AI stuff like the "pivot to video" and web3 bubbles/fads of the past decade. But I also feel sure that some of it is going to be fundamentally transformative once various chips fall where they will - authenticity/provenance questions, copyright litigation, trust issues, etc etc etc
The challenge is gonna be telling the bubble nonsense from the fundamental stuff.
At some point recently, iOS speech to text started adding a ton of commas to everything, which is driving me a little batty. I will say “comma” if I want one! Stop adding them unprompted!
Reflecting on the first 5 years of @tallpoppyhq (!!) – the first of many little notes like this, I expect.
There are 5 jobs to be done in the very earliest days of a #startup:
?? Hacker (coder/implementer) ? Hustler (#sales, #fundraising, partnerships and other funnel-driven work) ?? Subject Matter Expert (someone who has an unfair advantage in the product area) ? #Product Person (someone who can translate customer needs and the SME's thoughts into stuff the hacker can implement) ?? Ops (someone to keep the lights on; HR, finance, office, etc.)
These might all be the same person, they might be 5 people - but they all need to get done. The "hustler" work is a VERY different shape of work than a lot of techy folks are used to doing – it took me a long time to adapt my brain to the mindset of being the one pushing a deal forward. I'm still learning, really.
I often joke that cryptocurrencies are replaying the entire history of financial crimes but with blockchains; likewise Elon is replaying a highlights reel of the history of forum drama, but using twitter
Hoping the fediverse can help out: I'm in touch with a Ukranian family in #Toronto who are trying to get their cat (named Milana, in photo) from #Kraków, #Poland to Toronto this spring. They can cover some transport costs but are trying to connect with someone already making the trip. Email milana at hypatia.ca if you can help. Please boost!
Of the folks I interacted with on the bird site, I'm noticing these migration patterns:
* #security peeps have mostly moved over here, primarily to infosec.exchange and a few to hachyderm or self-hosting * dev & #FOSS folks have migrated en masse, primarily to hachyderm and self-hosting * science fiction friends have mostly made the jump * journalists are a mix - lots of folks cross-posting and lots still posting "write-only" over there, but lots still engaging too * my #LGBTQ peeps are active in both places * disability advocacy friends are still over there; a few #ADHD peeps are over here * DEI type folks have depressingly mostly not moved here, but to LinkedIn * founders & VCs have almost entirely _not_ moved * housing/urbanist types mostly haven't moved, especially Canadians
Curious how that lines up with what others are seeing, especially among groups I haven't listed (those happen to be the groups I personally interact with – curious about your personal equivalents!)
