I asked my Chinese friend about the Opium Wars. He did not recognize the term “Century of Humiliation”, but knew all about the Opium Wars and the Boxer Rebellion. He said that modern Chinese thought of that all as old history that didnt mattter, and to my surprise credited the colonial Europeans with ‘brightening’ China with industry and technology, where China was very backwards before.
The real thing Chinese bitterly remember is the Japanese war and occupation, and that in just the past 4 - 5 years relations with Japan and public attitudes towards Japan have gotten a lot worse, and there are a lot of conflicts over those tiny islands in the South China Sea.
