One of the free identity theft monitors we got as the result of a #dataBreach (#IdentityDefense) has informed my wife that her #SSN was in the #NPD breach Duh, hers and 100s of millions of others. This is their mostly useless advice for what to do. It's RIDICULOUS to advise people to freeze their credit report AFTER someone commits fraud with their SSN. And how well do you think the IRS will handle it if everyone impacted contacts them "for protection against tax refund fraud"? #privacy#infosec
San Francisco #pen show. What a zoo, and I only did Friday and Sunday. Friday it was shoulder to shoulder, with people paying extra for early access and still waiting in line to get in.
Now I have a glorious #fountainpen hangover. And the paper.... So much Japanese paper. IMHO the star of the #journaling scene was the musubi notebook. So much quality for $25 I felt guilty. Https://musu.bi
Naive question about #kentucky; if get a ride to Red River Gorge, and I need to fly home: is Lexington the only option, or are there ways to get to Cincinnati that make that airport also feasible? I'm visiting someone in the #climbing community there, and the have lots of local contacts, but I want to book a flight before I get there.
In about 90 minutes, and continuing twice-weekly, I'm going to stream Lobsters office hours and development on Twitch. I hope to answer questions and generally just let folks look over my shoulder as I work on things: https://lobste.rs/s/zzprkr/weekly_lobsters_office_hours
3. If we were to use a different label for Github Sponsors, do we really all feel like Microsoft Open Source Maintenance Payments for Workgroups is the winning payment-processing savior that we are all waiting for? They might not have today's immediate problem but let's not kid ourselves. I appreciate what they do for the ecosystem but I'm not about to consider them the avatar of justice in independent OSS maintainer payments.
4. Tidelift, Liberapay, Github Sponsors (and possibly others) are *extremely* skewed towards a "maintenance" view of independent maintainership. And, yeah, that's part of what I am doing (and I do use those platforms and hopefully will use more of them!) but Patreon is geared toward *creative work*, and structurally implies less of a strict orientation towards fixing bugs and responding to security reports or whatever.
The *other* part of what I want to be doing, hopefully, is explicitly *not* just "security updates for some existing libraries that I lucked into getting popular with". While for me, personally, the balance probably nets out to something like 40/40/10 maintenance/R&D/writing, the "R&D" part is *extremely* under-resourced in the open source world, even compared to our often-lamented problems with "maintenance". It's not even lamented!
Will some new megacorp come to depend on these new things, if they are good and successful? Probably! But I don't want my business model to be "design cool things for free, then clumsily attempt to extract rents from people I can trick into depending on them".
So anyway uh turns out this wasn't really about payment processors, but you can pay me for that on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/creatorglyph but please don't pay through the iOS app. No need to make a donation to Apple in the process.
The fact that heroic gestures and dedicated volunteers in such projects have occasionally resulted in some reasonably good, maybe even once in a while brilliant outcomes does not mean that, structurally, this is a good way to do things.
In the comments on the article and on other social media sites I have seen people having reactions that are … well … reactionary. I have reached out to some of them but I am going to put out a blanket offer here: if you find this scary and vague, I can have an email conversation with you about this to walk through the context.
I'm not on any committee, I don't have secrets, but I do understand the harm that the people who have received suspensions or bans have done, even if they can't see it.
I am putting out this offer because the people on these committees, who I am friendly with, have taken an absolutely unhinged amount of flak and stress for this, and I feel like the rest of the community who understand should step up. I am putting it out in this form (private conversations) because a public conversation can easily turn into a contest, and I'm not interested in a debate where people are trying to score points and flex.
