My Dad would’ve been 82 today.
He was a hairdresser all his working life. He never moved house. He was married to my mum for nearly 50 years. He liked to travel, loved holidays in Greece and he was an excellent cook. He loved baking cakes and making jam. He taught me to knit. He believed most things could be fixed with cellotape or WD40.
He was kind and I miss him.

Maybe it’s just me but one odd thing since he’s been gone is I really want to share photos of him.
Like, this was a person. They were nice and they meant a lot to me and I want you to know they existed.
I don’t know why, I just do.

So I thought I’d post a couple of pictures and maybe if you wanted to, you could share the person you miss?

Can anyone suggest a wheelchair bag large enough for say a carton of milk and a loaf of bread that DOESN’T attach to the back of the chair?
Due to the design of my chair and arthritis in my spine I cannot twist round to manage a bag on the back.

I’ve so far made do with a regular rucksack worn backwards but with the colder weather it’s just not going to be practical or comfortable on top of a winter coat.

I planted several sunflowers along the fence quite a few weeks ago.
Only two survived to become visible plants and I thought one was a goner as it fell over.

But it decided it wasn’t done. It kept growing up and it’s just bloomed a tiny little flower compared to its big sister.

#Wheelchair using folk - what is something you wish non-wheelchair users knew? Or something you didn’t realise until you got your first chair?

Because there’s definitely stuff I never realised before I used one.

For example - if you’ve never had mobility issues or used a wheelchair you probably have no idea just how slanted the pavement you’re walking on is. Feet are really good at compensating for that shit without you even noticing.

Dropped curbs and cambers are one of the most awkward things I navigate every single time I go out in Roach.

Generally, the easiest way for me to get across them is to hug the side of the pavement furthest from the road because it’s usually less of an angle.

If you stop to let me pass, please don’t flatten yourself against the fence/hedge thinking you’re just giving me space. You’re actually forcing me to use the steeper bit of the slope.

At best it’s going to make me have to lean a fair bit to stay upright.
At worst, my chair may drift into the road…

Roach is a folding powerchair. She wasn’t cheap but she is on the cheaper end of the spectrum of these things, so it may not the case for every wheelchair user you meet and it may not even be the case outside the UK, but it is something I didn’t even consider before I had Roach.

@davewalker I did read the notes and I don’t disagree with this sentiment but those bloody rental bikes and scooters left on pavements are a royal pain in the ass to wheelchair users. They’re not the most significant problem for anyone who can walk around them easily or pick them up out of the way.

The thing is, pre-cut veg *is* for lazy people. Laziness isn’t a crime. It’s also convenient for busy parents and folks working long hours.

Accessibility is for everyone.
It is extremely rare that something accessible to a disabled person makes things *less* accessible for the non-disabled.
